Desert Fiber Arts, a local group that warms the Gallery with comforting
texture and color every other January, presents Desert Green. The
traditional weaving that many of the members practice is natural and earth
friendly in itself; for example, wool from sheep on nearby farms is spun
and woven on traditional human-powered equipment. Plants are used for both
dyes and basket material and fabric. Rag rugs have always made use of
worn-out clothing.
This year Desert Fiber Arts is emphasizing this "green" aspect of their work
as well as showing how unusual cycled materials can be used. They can weave
garbage bags into rugs and create textiles with audio and video tape.
Their work is always beautiful and touchable, and it can be functional or
enjoyed just for its beauty. originality and connection to the world. This
exhibit gives the viewer a fresh way to think about how we create and reuse
what we might have thrown away, as well
