Beads Behind Bars- Fantastic News!

Allied Arts’ Beads Behind Bars program was the recipient of one of the 2010 Women Helping Women Grants.  The WHWF grant will provide funding for supplies for the program for 2010.

Beads Behind Bars began in April of 2008 when Lucy Dole of Allied Arts took her passion for beading with teenagers in the juvenile justice system into the BF County Juvenile Detention Center.  The program which began as an extension of Allied Arts involvement in JJ Girl Power! program (classes taught at the gallery) has been enthusiastically accepted by the kids and the staff at the detention center.

Each Sunday afternoon from 1-4 pm we work both girls and boys who have maintained their level to earn the right to attend the classes.  Most often there are separate classes for boys and girls.  We average about 16 students total each week.

Basic jewelry making skills are taught- earring construction, attaching clasps for necklaces/bracelets and simple design suggestions are given.

Construction of jewelry and constructive social interaction occur around the table each week with the hope that the skills learned will carry over in to the lives of the teenagers who participate.  Creative pieces of jewelry reflect the innate talents of these young people!!

Thanks to WHWF for their investment in our Bead Behind Bars program and the lives of these very appreciative young people!!!!

As an ongoing request, Lucy asks for any old beads or broken necklaces that you might consider donating to this great cause. Lucy wanted to extend her thanks to all of you who have made donations to the Beads Behind Bars program at the Juvenile Justice Center. The girls are delighted with the beads and your caring.

Beads Behind Bars also wanted to thank the following companies and groups for making corporate donations:

  • Kiwanis Club of Tri-Cities Industry Foundation
  • Richland Rotary Club
  • Columbia Center Rotary
  • Craft Warehouse
  • Dreamweavers (in Richland, WA)
  • Fire Mountaion Gems
  • Rio Grande Jewelry Supply
  • Shipwreck Beads

Bead donations may be left at the Gallery marked for "Beads Behind Bars".
